INAUGURAL SHOW AND SALE OF MODERN PIGS
A ROARING SUCCESS AT BEESTON

The Welsh Pig Society organised a Special show and sale of pedigree pigs from the modern breeds in conjunction with a pre sale show whose special feature was the Champion of Champions Show which consisted of most of the Breed Championship winning pigs at this years agricultural shows where there were classes for the Welsh pig. Some of these animals competing in the Champion of Champions show were also included in the sale.

A huge crowd turned up for this inaugural event with breeders present from Cumbria, Yorkshire, Lancashire, in the north and all the way through the Midlands to Kent in the South. There were also many from both North and South Wales.

The Female and Supreme Championship was awarded to an absolutely outstanding in-pig gilt, Siskin Lucky Girl 6th exhibited by David Finch of Benfleet, Essex. This daughter of Slade James 10th had been bred on 5th June to Birdcombe Emperor 45th and had already won Champion White Pig at this year’s Royal Norfolk Show. In the sale Lucky Girl topped the sale selling for 780 gns and now joins the old established Kilvrough Herd of Mike Cross based at Gabeinoss, Swansea who owns the only herd of Welsh Pigs on the Gower Peninsula.

Reserve Female Champion was Vinery Empress 4417 who won the Supreme Championship at the Welsh Smallholder Show earlier this year. She was exhibited by Christine Vaughan of Upton, Nr. Nuneaton, Warwickshire. She sold for 520 gns selling to Reg Windsor & Sons of Sound, Nantwich.

The Male Championship was awarded to Christine Vaughan with her Vinery Emperor 4437 but he was later unsold in the ring. Res Male Champion went to Phil Fowlie of Anglesey with his Braemor Emperor 3rd who later sold to HG Williams of Portdinorwic, Gwynedd.

Welsh Boars were led by The Glamorgan Vale Welsh Pork Co who sold their Slade Vulcan 4th for 700 gns to Peter Hopkin of Rhiwfawr, Swansea for his Crachllwyn Herd. Maiden Gilts sold to 480 gns to Siskin Theresa 12th from David Finch selling to M Paddock, Cheadle, Stoke-on-Trent.

There was a good selection of other breeds on offer. They were topped at 550 gns for a Large White Maiden Gilt Calderbroook Primrose B4370 from Richard Brown of Mid-Fylde Piggeries selling to Steve Loveless of Bridport, Dorset. Lnadrace sold to 400 gns for the in-pig gilt Bickham Frua 27th from David Hobbs of Wimborne, Dorset selling to D Gray & Son, Sheffield. Duroc sold to 420 gns for Gilt with seven piglets from Mr & Mrs Andrew Walton of Backford, Chester selling to Rosie Watson of Bradnop, Leek.
