Pedigree Pig Sales - National Pedigree Sale Saturday 10th October 2009

BIG CROWD FOR PEDIGREE PIGS AT ROSS-ON-WYE
Pig breeders from throughout the UK converged on Ross Market for the British Pig Association’s Annual Show & Sale on Saturday. At the end of the day’s trading nearly all the pigs offered found new homes with buyers from as far afield as Anglesey, Cornwall, Cumbria, Sussex and Co.Cork in the Republic of Ireland, and last year’s record average for the event was surpassed again.

The top price of the day was 580 guineas, paid for the Supreme Show Champion, the Gloucestershire Old Spot boar Chapel Patrick 11, consigned by S.J.Booth, Lymm, Cheshire. He was purchased by Richard Lutwyche, bidding on behalf of cheese producer Charles Martell, maker of the famous “Stinking Bishop” cheese, who keeps a herd of traditionally reared Old Spot pigs alongside his Gloucester herd of cattle at Dymock, Glos.

Nine more pigs made over 400gs with a particularly strong trade for in pig gilts. At 470 gs D.B.Perkins, Narberth, Pembrokeshire took the British Saddleback gilt, Toller Dinah 238 from Mrs.P.Darvill’s Dorset based herd, and at the same price Aberystwyth breeder Andrew Davies sold his Welsh gilt Trialmawr Daffodil 167 to A.J.Moss, Bognor Regis, West Sussex. Another Welsh pig in the money was Messrs B & C.Beck’s junior boar Panorama Earl 140, purchased for 450gs by Mr.J.Feilden, Warleigh, Bath.

BBC cameras were at the event, filming for an upcoming series hosted by Jimmy Doherty, due for transmission next spring. Jimmy was an enthusiastic bidder at the sale, securing Berkshire, British Saddleback and Middle White gilts for his “Jimmy’s Farm” enterprise near Ipswich, Suffolk.
