Pedigree Pig Sales BIG CROWDS FOR PEDIGREE PIGS AT ROSS-ON-WYE It was standing room only at the start of the British Pig Association’s Annual Show & Sale of pedigree pigs at Ross Market on Saturday. There was a slightly smaller entry than in previous years, but no less enthusiasm from the buyers, and over 70 of the 80 pigs entered found new homes in herds from Kent to Cornwall at a new record average for the event. Eleven different breeds were represented, and included the first pigs sold in this country from the Mangalitza breed, a curly coated pig which originated in Hungary. The top two prices both came for British Saddlebacks, with the top bid coming late in the day for Cheshire vendor Mrs D. Beeby’s January boar Brydges Viscount 385. Martin Lacey from Splisby, Lincs, bidding by telephone, tried hard to secure him, but the hammer finally fell at 600 guineas to Kingswood Farms, Canterbury, Kent. Top price gilt came from Andy Gready’s Heytesbury herd at Warminster, Wilts. Andy is also the indefatigable Chief Steward and his hard work is invaluable in the smooth running of the event and his Breed Champion Heytesbury Bell 20 made 560gs to S.B.Collings, Launceston, Cornwall. The Oxford Sandy & Black supporters are growing in numbers and Ken Moore, Kings Norton, Birmingham, had to go to 520gs to secure the Breed Champion, Mrs M.F.Case’s boar Longash Clarence 14. Arthur Uglow, and his daughter Anne, brought a large team of pigs from Devon, and were rewarded with a top call of 450gs for their Welsh in pig gilt Edgcumbe Goldilocks 2456, purchased by Mrs L.Perrott, Newport, Monmouthshire, and Phil Fowlie of the Braemor herd on Anglesey, sold his Welsh gilt for 400gs and his boar for 420gs. The two Mangalitza maiden gilts, consigned by Heather Royle, Coombe Bissett, Salisbury both realised 200gs. AVERAGES AUCTIONEERS: NORTON & BROOKSBANK (with Williams & Watkins) |
