Pedigree Sausage Competitions

 

The BPA national pedigree sausage competition will be held again this autumn.

 

Heats will be held at shows around the country including, Countryside Live at Harrogate, Welsh Winter Fair with the final at the Smithfield Show in December.

2008 National Pedigree Sausage Competition

This year there will be heats at the following shows. Click here for more details of these shows.

Ø Countryside Live - October 25th & 26th
Ø BBC Good Food Show Scotland - October 31st to November 2nd
Ø East of England Christmas Fair -  November 7th to 9th
Ø BBC Good Food Show London - November 14th to 16th
Ø English Winter Fair - November 15th & 16th
Ø Welsh Winter Fair - December 1st & 2nd
Ø   Royal Smithfield Christmas Fair - December 5th & 6th


Its really easy to enter the competition. At most shows you only need to bring your sausages along on the day with a meat certificate. The best sausages will receive Gold, Silver and Bronze quality certificates. The Champions and Reserve Champions in the Breakfast and Speciality classes will receive cash prizes and qualify for the Grand Final at the Royal Smithfield Christmas Fair.

Pedigree Pork producers are invited to take part in these industry funded roadshows. There will be competitions for Sausages, Pies, Bacon, Gammon, Meatballs & Faggots and Black Pudding with a special competition for Young Sausage Maker.  

There will also be Trade Stands for Seasoning and Ingredients Supplies, Food Machinery, Packaging Supplies, Scales and Weighting Machines and many other products of interest to anyone selling pork or producing their own pork products.  

The format is simple. Each event takes place from 2pm to 7pm. Enter your products from 2pm to 4pm. Trade Stands are open from 2pm to 7pm. From 6 pm to 7pm anyone entering products in the competitions is invited to a pork supper with the Presentation of Product Awards taking place at 7pm.

Awards will be based on a points system Gold 95 -100, Silver 90 -94 and Bronze 85 -89.

Pedigree producers entering these competitions should provide a BPA meat certificate which can be downloaded from the BPA website for any birth notified pig. Winners will  qualify for the final in London next year where the National Champion will be chosen and special prizes for pedigree products will be awarded.

British Sausage Week coincides with Bonfire Night this year. From 3rd to 9th November all sorts of Sausage related activities and promotions will be taking place. If you would like to arrange a special tasting or promotion during British Sausage Week please send the details of your farm shop or your farmers market with a description of the event to BSAS 2008 Events, AHDBMS, Winterhill House, Snowdon Drive, Milton Keynes MK6 1AX or fax the information to 01908 671722. BPEX have promotional material available such as the set of recipe postcards shown above.

If you sell through a local butcher or restaurant why not encourage them to take part in British Sausage Week. Charity events are also being organised.
