As with humans influenza in pigs is a seasonal challenge.  The following Code Of Practice and enclosed documents have been produced to help producers minimise the risk of herds being infected with any strain of influenza virus.  This is particularly important given the current outbreak of influenza in humans caused by pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus.  The following documents have been produced by Industry in partnership with Defra.  The aim is to provide guidance on how to minimise the risk of introducing this virus to your pig herd and how to minimise its spread should it enter your herd.

Influenza in Pigs – Key Information

·  Information sheet for Open Farms and Herds

If you have pigs in close proximity to the general public such as on an outdoor unit by a public footpath or open farms you are advised to ensure a distance of 3 metres between the public and any pigs using of perimeter fencing or other appropriate barriers. Influenza viruses are transmitted by the spread of respiratory secretions, mostly via direct contact, short distance aerosol spread.  Aerosols from humans such as sneezing typically travel for 1-2 metres.
